For this article, I met up with the inspiring Sharon McGrail, also known as THE ECO CHEF. Sharon is a NYC-based heath coach and certified chef from the Natural Gourmet Institute. I had the pleasure of getting to know her at the Green Thumb Conference back in March, and have since kept in touch!

After a delicious vegetarian/dairy-free brunch at The Butchers Daughter in Soho, Sharon and I put together a list of

5 Products You Really Should Ixnay From Your Diet....or at least cut back on

  1. SODA - This is a complete given, and yet there are still people who drink it regularly. I promise I am not judging...I completely get it. Water is boring. If you are the type of person who needs flavor, try any of the following as a healthy substitute:

  2. NAKED JUICE - This is SO bad for you. Don't even touch it. It is not "all natural" as it claims and it contains GMOs (genetically modified organisms). The keywords you are looking for in juice are "raw", "organic" and "cold-pressed". If you do not own a juicer/blender and are operating on convenience (as most of us are...) then I recommend the following brands (you can find all at Whole Foods):

    • Suja Elements - My favorite is "24 Karat" which contains carrot, apple, orange, pineapple, peach & banana.

    • Tumeric Elixir of Life - The Mineral Green Elixir is AMAZING. it has a little kick to it too.

    • BluePrintJuice - Their "Manifreshto" is "to give you the juice, the whole juice and nothing but the juice." Thank you and thank you.

  3. WHEAT - Okay...so this one I know is challenging, and I am not saying to give it up forever. However, try going a week without wheat and see how your body feels. Modern wheat contains opiates which give these processed carbs an addictive quality. Plus, it is very difficult to digest for most people and could be the cause of a lot of your pains and ailments without even realizing. Try opting for brown rice products or corn tortillas. If you want to introduce wheat back into your diet then Sharon highly recommends Ezekiel Bread (Sprouted Grain Bread). It is made with absolutely no flour, no GMOs, no added sugars or anything artificial.

  4. DAIRY - I like cheese and I LOVE greek yogurt, but I DO know that I have a bit of an intolerance to it....and yet I still consume it. Why? I am going to experiment with eliminating wheat for a week and then dairy and see how my body feels. Sharon believes in eliminating all conventional dairy products and replacing it with raw, organic dairy. Have you heard of raw milk? Read this article on the campaign for Real Milk.

  5. TAP WATER - Sharon states this is one of the worst things you can put in your body and should without a doubt be eliminated. Tap water contains traces of arsenic, chlorine, and fluoride (controversial depending whether you are pro-fluoride or not....that's an entirely different conversation) among other "regulated" contaminants and unregulated toxins.

    • Purchase a water bottle with a built in filter. Brita and Bobble are amongst the most popular brands. Keep in mind, these brands do not eliminate fluoride. If you are looking for a water filtration system that DOES remove this, then Sharon recommends the brand Berkey.
